Social Housing Units
The plot is on the edge of a densely populated neighbourhood on the outskirts of the La Laguna/Santa Cruz de Tenerife conurbation.
Characterized morphologically by the phenomenon of marginal urban development, the neighbourhood’s original small, self-constructed houses are interspersed with more recent mass housing developments. Both types of housing are defined by the narrowness of the passageways in relation to the buildings and the small size of the plots, a product of the desire to maximize the use of the land.
The project’s main objective is reflected in the typological relation of the residential units and their system of patios, which have been placed at right angles to the existing streets; these patios can be understood as elements for promoting urban relation and integration between residents, while facilitating the connections between adjoining streets.
The patios that crisscross the spaces between the buildings can be seen as spatial units with their own identity; they unite the interior façades with those on the exterior, and virtually extend the public area into the buildings through the folds in the façades in the entrance areas.
